The only measure is the way you feel behind the wheel and your wins. But eventually I got really tired of the lack of measurable improvement. And sometimes your tunes are a complete disaster. You get no surefire way of telling whether your car is better now than it was, you have to base it on your test runs with the car. It’s time consuming and frustrating to try to learn all the lingo that goes into tuning and imagine how that might realistically affect your handling. It’s time consuming to keep messing with Tuning. I admire the intent behind this new system, because I imagine its a lot closer to what a real racer experiences. You just might have a better tuning setup, or know how to take the turns better. You don’t actually have a faster car than anyone else on the track. The whole system is based on 1) taking the car around the track to get a feel for it 2) messing with tuning aspects 3) taking it around the track again to see new tuning has changed performance 4) rinse, repeat. Instead, they created this tuning system using real-inspired practices to discover better performance in your car. PC2 completely does away with that, because lets face it, its not realistic. With each new part, you can see how the performance is improved via little meters that reflect horsepower, cornering, etc. ![]() They would have tiers like “intermediate, advanced, sport, & racing” for all things like brakes, exhaust, and tires. The traditional race-sim system for improving your car involved purchasing new parts that will increase performance. I love simulation racing, but until now, it’s always been a game too… PC2 takes it too far. Project Cars 2 delivers on both of those things. Here are my thoughts on why this game sucks.Īs the Gran Turismo series gets further and further from the point, its nice to see some racing games are still taking the single-player focused, simulation-focused route. But none of them are accessible to me in my current setup, so I bought Project Cars 2, because it seemed to be the latest and greatest - and way better reviewed than Gran Turismo Sport. Over the years, I have enjoyed Forza and Gran Turismo for several different systems. I didn’t really have any ready to play though. Multiplayer modes should ease that feeling a tiny bit, extending the playable life beyond the completion of the career.I went through a phase recently where I got back into the idea of racing games. Longtime fans of arcade racing may find the gameplay types begin to feel like a grind after a while, though. None of these events are terribly innovative, but they should keep the younger players that comprise the game's target audience occupied long enough. Finally, Squad Series has players go through a series of missions, and the player with the highest score at the end wins. Battle Arena should be self-explanatory, while Disrupter plays out like capture the flag. Survival has player collecting batteries to buy time for their shields. Attack mode takes place on the regular race tracks and players are tasked with eliminating bad guys before time expires. Hunter mode is a co-op mode that allows up to four players to combine forces to hunt down waves of "lemons" in special battle arenas. ![]() Race mode offers exactly what you'd expect, while Battle Race mode offers that sort of staple arcade racer experience: get around the track as fast as possible while punishing your opponents. Additionally there are two multiplayer-only modes: Battle Arena and Disruptor. Players will encounter up to six different game modes during the main career: Race, Battle Race, Hunter, Attack, Survival, and Squad. Each of these moves fills up a special turbo meter which can be activated by pressing square/X. Players can drive backwards while on the ground or *ahem* do a barrel roll while in the air. In addition to the staples of arcade racing, special moves can be performed-either on the ground or in the air-by tilting the right analog stick in one of four directions. The triangle/Y button is used to activate any power-ups you have picked up, and the circle/B button can be used to initiate a drift. This move is good for accessing many of the many shortcuts that are littered throughout the brightly colored tracks. The X (or "cross" if you prefer)/A button is used to jump. In the default setting, R2/RT is used to accelerate and L2/LT is used to brake and reverse. Anyone familiar with Mario Kart's control scheme shouldn't have a problem here, though it should be noted that there are a few necessary differences. When you're ready to hop behind the wheel, you won't find many problems. Suddenly a mysterious voice calls out to the man and explains that he is destined to die but offers to help him reverse the fate. Shortly after, he wakes up in a strange room floating in a black abyss. The time is 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon, a young man leaves the café and goes for a walk around Lebensbaum but half an hour later an unknown assailant runs up behind and stabs him straight in the back, quickly killing him. (This plot follows the choices up to Ending A.) They are labelled A, B-1, B-2, C, D and E with the Extra two referred to as EX endings. The type of endings the player gets depends on the choices that are made throughout the story. The game has over six endings with another two extra endings that are available once the previous six are unlocked. One to keep track of the present time whilst the other keeps track of the period Eike is in. It should be noted that the Digipad is powered by energy units but they can be easily found lying around in the environment.īecause of the time travelling elements, the game has two clocks running at real time. This allows Eike to change the future by altering events in the past, for better or for worse. This also means that the characters in the past are often related to those in the future. Despite the broad range of time differences, the game entirely takes place within Lebensbaum meaning that the general layout will be the same. Equipped with the Digipad (or Z-Pad in the PSP port) given to Eike from the Homonculus, Eike can freely travel to four different time periods, 2001 (being Eike's present time), 1980, 19. The main crux of the game play lies with the time travel mechanics. The game is strictly an adventure game where Eike travels around the fictional German town of Lebensbaum (translated to English as Life's Tree.) The story progresses as Eike talks to the town's inhabitants whilst helping them solve their problems by way of talking to other folks or by taking/giving them certain items. The choices the player makes throughout the game lead to different endings that each provide insight on the game's overall mystery. The plot follows the story of Eike Kusch as he attempts to solve his own murder by traveling back in time while being aided by a shadowy figure known as the Homonculus. The game focuses on the elements of surprise and suspense, though the player's actions consist mostly of exploration and puzzle-solving. Outside of North America, the game goes by the title Shadow of Memories and, early in development, it was also known as Day of Walpurgis and Time Adventure.
